Basic baskets start to be distributed along the Juruá River after a successful fundraising campaign

At the beginning of April, the institutions and organizations in the Middle Juruá Territory (TMJ) consortium, together with private companies and groups working for sustainable development and conservation, joined forces and created a campaign to deliver basic food baskets to families who suffered from the severe flood that recently hit the region.

The flooding of homes caused damage to the floors of houses, loss of gardens and created a particularly critical situation for homeless and indigenous people. The situation has been exacerbated by the novel coronavirus pandemic, since people were forced to live in community spaces, which intensifies the risk of contamination. The flood also heightened food insecurity, due to the loss of agricultural production, and reduced agroextractive activities that are fundamental to the region's rural economy.

Throughout the month of April, TMJ entities went to great lengths to share information on their social networks and activate their networks of contacts, in order to raise awareness among as many people as possible. The fundraising campaign was delivered via an online platform, with the amount collected visible to everyone, and donations could be made in three categories: basic basket, hygiene items, or both. The amount donated was flexible according to the donor, and the stipulated collection time was one month, ending the campaign on the 30th April and allowing the supplies to be delivered in May.

Due to the pandemic situation, the work of assembling and distributing food baskets is being carried out tirelessly by local associations working directly in the region, in conjunction with the Fundação Amazônia Sustentável (FAS), to minimise contact between people. In addition to dissemination via our social networks, Instituto Juruá is also making available a boat for the transportation of baskets and residents. In total, the campaign raised R$27,780.00, and 977 baskets were assembled, which will be distributed in pairs to 488 households over the next few months. Many families have already been assisted thanks to the collective efforts of institutions, residents and donors, played both during and after the campaign!
