Still in January 2025, the president of IJ adjusted his international agenda to participate in a meeting at the FAO headquarters in Rome to try to include Amazon fishing demands in the global discussion on freshwater fishing. Freshwater fishing and fish are important agents for  humanity’s well-being, contributing to food security, ecosystem productivity, and biodiversity protection. However, due to its invisibility, freshwater fishing is frequently undervalued and, consequently, does not receive proper consideration in the decisions regarding  water resources management and sustainable development.

The second global conference of freshwater fishing will be based on the first Global Conference of Freshwater Fishing, which happened in 2015 and had the participation of more than 200 people and resulted in The Rome Declaration: Ten Steps to Responsible Freshwater Fishing.

The goal of the second conference is to build on the lessons learned from the previous event, increase sector representation, as well as the participation of small-scale fishers, and develop a concrete strategy for the future.
